Intake Coordinator/Court Navigator

Hours: 30 hours/week (including some evenings and weekends)

As an Intake Coordinator/Court Navigator at MLSC, your mission is to provide enhanced support and referral services to individuals facing legal challenges, particularly within the family court system and when reporting hate crimes. This pivotal role involves close collaboration with legal professionals and stakeholders across the justice system.

Client Intake & Case Management
Conduct client intakes to gather information, assess legal needs, and identify language and other barriers to accessing services
Explain MLSC services, mandates, and financial eligibility criteria clearly and accessibly.
Demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity in all client interactions
Coordinate language interpretation for summary advice consultations when required.
Make timely referrals to specialized legal services and community-based supports when needs exceed the clinic’s resources or mandate
Supervise law student and volunteer placements; ensuring daily tasks are performed accurately and completed within the specified timeframe
Maintain meticulous records of client interactions, case updates, and service outcomes
Identify opportunities to improve intake processes and service delivery
Adapt to evolving responsibilities in support of MLSC’s mission and goals
Attend regular team meetings, check-ins, and collaborative planning as required
Court Engagement & Community Support
Offer empathetic support to individuals facing challenges related to addiction, employment, housing instability, and mental health
Collaborate with duty counsel, defense counsel, victims services and other legal professionals to ensure appropriate representation and support
Assist clients with applications for Legal Aid services, where appropriate
Performs other related duties as required

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Law, Communications, Education, Criminology, Sociology, or related disciplines.
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
Proficiency in MS PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
Strong understanding of confidentiality, privacy legislation, and professional boundaries.
Knowledge of the Canadian judicial system and community resources.
Demonstrated collaborative, analytical, problem-solving, and oral communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
Availability for occasional evening and weekend work.
Deep understanding of access to justice challenges facing diverse communities such as Ontario’s Muslim community, including systemic racism, Islamophobia, and anti-Black racism.
Strong interpersonal skills and familiarity with video conferencing and online tools (e.g., Google Workspace).
